Empowering Diageo's Talent to Thrive Globally

Diageo has consistently engaged me to develop their teams across EMEA and the Americas, from entry-level to senior leadership. My personal branding and leadership expertise have been crucial in supporting their global talent and driving success and growth. Recently, I led an in-person workshop with Guinness Ghana, a subsidiary of Diageo.

Opportunity

To celebrate International Women's Day, Guinness Ghana, a subsidiary of Diageo, aimed to empower its mid to senior-level female employees. The focus was on equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to navigate and excel in a male-dominated industry while addressing the cultural challenges prevalent in Ghana, such as the expectation for women to be "seen and not heard."

Ghana's cultural norms often make asserting oneself in the workplace challenging for women. These norms can pressure women to be passive, allowing their work to "speak for itself" rather than advocating for one's contributions. This can be particularly limiting in industries like brewing, where leadership presence and personal branding are crucial for career advancement.

Solution

Guinness Ghana Breweries organized an intimate round table discussion for 20 mid- to senior-level female employees to address these challenges. The session focused on developing leadership presence and personal branding, providing participants with practical tools to assert themselves in the workplace.

Key elements of the event included:

  • Leadership Presence: Marielle provided insights on developing a strong leadership presence, emphasizing the importance of body language, communication skills, and confidence in establishing authority and influence in a male-dominated environment.
  • Personal Branding: The session also covered the essentials of personal branding, helping the women understand how to effectively communicate their value, advocate for their achievements, and build a professional identity that aligns with their career goals.
  • Interactive Discussions: The round table format encouraged open dialogue, allowing participants to share their experiences and challenges. This interactive approach ensured that the advice and strategies provided were directly relevant to the cultural and organizational context the women were navigating.
